Philip bio
Phillip is a journalist, advocate, and prison reform organizer currently incarcerated in North Carolina. His work focuses on sentencing reform, legislative advocacy, and exposing the failures of carceral systems through journalism and personal essays. In 2020, Smith coauthored the Prison Resources Repurposing Act, legislation aimed at creating release opportunities for people serving life sentences in North Carolina.

Smith is a Smart Justice Fellow with the ACLU of North Carolina, a Stillwater Award-winning journalist, and a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. He is also the author of the poetry collection LIFE: Learning Instructions for Everyone...in prison & out and is currently working on a memoir exploring activism from inside prison.
