Bridging the Gap: Amplifying Incarcerated Voices was a two-day conference dedicated to strengthening journalism in and about American prisons while supporting the growing network of incarcerated writers, journalists, filmmakers, and storytellers shaping the field. The convening brought together incarcerated media makers, newsrooms, publishers, advocates, and organizations working to expand ethical collaboration and amplify voices from inside prison walls.

The conference explored the persistent barriers incarcerated storytellers face — from censorship and restrictive communication systems to limited access to publishing networks — while highlighting the innovative ways incarcerated journalists continue to build community, share knowledge, and document the realities of incarceration. Through workshops, discussions, and collaborative problem-solving, participants examined how to support prison journalism with greater integrity, accountability, and long-term impact.

Centered on connection-building and collective advocacy, the event also focused on defending the legal rights and free expression of incarcerated writers while creating stronger pathways between inside storytellers and outside media institutions.
